The race for an Olympic place: Spotlight on Argentina

13 May 2024

There are just three competition weeks left until the ranking cut-off date for the Olympic Tennis Event on 10 June – and the fight to secure a spot in Argentina’s team, for one, looks as intriguing as any.

Here's a run down of the players who could confirm their spot at Paris 2024 over the coming few weeks

Men

Sebastian Baez
  • Baez is in prime position to make his Olympic main draw debut at Paris 2024
  • The 23-year-old competed at the 2018 Youth Olympic Tennis Event in his home city, Buenos Aires, and won doubles gold alongside Facundo Diaz Acosta
  • Baez could solidify his qualification hopes at Roland Garros this year, with plenty of points up for grabs after he fell in the first round there in 2023
  • Baez has fond memories of Paris, having finished runner-up in the boys’ singles at 2018 Roland Garros
Francisco Cerundolo
  • Hot on the heels of Baez, Cerundolo is odds-on to take up a place at Paris 2024
  • The 25-year-old Argentine is looking to compete at the Olympics for a second time – albeit hoping for better fortune having lost to Liam Broady in the first round at Tokyo 2020
  • He achieved a career-best Grand Slam run at 2023 Roland Garros, reaching the round of 16, so has points to defend ahead of the Paris 2024 ranking cut-off on 10 June

Tomas Martin Etcheverry
  • Etcheverry is eyeing a place at the Olympic Tennis Event for the first time
  • The 24-year-old achieved his best Grand Slam result at Roland Garros last year, reaching the quarter-finals
  • As a result he has plenty of points to defend in Paris in the race for an Olympic place, with two of his countrymen – Mariano Navone and Facundo Diaz Acosta - ready to pounce should he slip up
Mariano Navone
  • Navone is looking to take part at the Olympic Tennis Event for the first time
  • The 23-year-old has rocketed into contention for a spot at Paris 2024, having ranked outside the Top 200 this time last year
  • He has won his first six professional titles at ATP Challenger events on clay since June 2023. All of the points that make up Navone’s current ranking have been won at clay court events
  • Navone is set to make his Grand Slam main draw debut at this year’s Roland Garros
Facundo Diaz Acosta
  • Facundo Diaz Acosta’s Olympic dreams could be thwarted by the fact that there are currently four Argentine players ranked above him
  • Diaz Acosta would usually have done enough to qualify on two counts – by virtue of his current ranking, and by the fact that he won gold at the Pan American Games
  • Regional Games champions qualify directly for Paris 2024 if they hold a top 400 ranking - providing the 4 direct acceptance spots per nation haven’t already been filled
  • Diaz Acosta could put pressure on his nation's top four and bolster his ranking with a strong showing at Roland Garros, having lost in the first round last year
  • He won doubles gold with Sebastian Baez at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Tennis Event

Women

Nadia Podoroska
  • Nadia Podoroska is hoping to take part in the Olympic Tennis Event for a second time at Paris 2024.
  • The 27-year-old Argentine reached the third round on her Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, having qualified after winning gold at the 2019 Pan American Games.
  • Podoroska will be delighted to return to Roland Garros, having reached the semi-finals on her main draw debut there in 2020
Maria Lourdes Carle
  • Maria Lourdes Carle is set to take part in an Olympic Games for the first time
  • The 24-year-old won the silver medal at the Pan American Games, a result which guarantees her a place at Paris 2024 so long as she is ranked inside the top 400 on 10 June
  • Lourdes Carle took part in the 2018 Youth Olympic Tennis Event in Buenos Aires, narrowly missing out on a girls’ doubles bronze medal
  • She has climbed to a career-high ranking of No. 71, and is set to make her Grand Slam debut at Roland Garros later this month
Julia Riera
  • Julia Riera Is hoping to take part in an Olympic Games for the first time
  • Riera has raced into contention for a place at Paris 2024 after winning the biggest titles of her career on the ITF World Tennis Tour over the past month – at W75 Chiasso and W100 Wiesbaden
  • Riera has never competed in the main draw at a Grand Slam. She is set to make her Roland Garros debut at the qualifying event this year
