He is only a few days into his new role and Pope Leo XIV has already hosted world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and some very special trophies – Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge and Davis Cup – in the Vatican.

Italy are reigning champions in both Billie Jean King Cup and Davis Cup – the World Cups of Tennis – and are clearly proud of that, and so they should be.

It is wonderful to see the game of tennis having an audience with such esteemed company and it is great to hear that Pope Leo XIV is a tennis fan.

“I consider myself a recreational tennis player. Since I left Peru, I haven’t had many chances to play, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on the court,” he previously told the Augustinian Order.

As the newly-elected head of the Catholic Church he is probably short of time, but the 69-year-old would have been eligible to contest the ITF Masters World Championships, which are currently taking place in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The ITF Masters World Team Championships for players aged 60 through to 70 and above began on Sunday, with the Individual Championships taking place from 17 May.

Sometimes it is hard to find the time for recreational activities when starting a new role. Perhaps this is something we could explore in the future.
