Sherif storms to victory at W100 Madrid
Mayar Sherif claimed her first title of the season at W100 Madrid on Sunday - her first tournament win on the ITF World Tennis Tour since 2020.
It has been far from an ideal start to 2025 for the Egyptian. Sherif had to wait until March for her first match-win of the year at WTA Miami, and registered just one further win at W100 Zaragoza in April. After a difficult start to the year, she was in desperate need of a strong week.
That is exactly what she got with an impressive run to the title in Madrid without dropping a set. Not only that - it was a stacked field and she comfortably dispatched everyone in her path, notching up wins over 4th seed Chloe Paquet in the semi-finals and 2nd seed Renata Zarazua in the final.
The 28-year-old was the top seed in Madrid but would have undoubtedly felt some added pressure after a tough season to date as well as plenty of people expecting her to win the event.
Given how little momentum she's picked up this season, it was an excellent performance to win the tournament in such dominant fashion.

With the clay court season well underway, Sherif's return to form has come just in time. Fifteen of her 18 professional titles have come on clay, and it is no secret that she feels very comfortable on the surface.
With clay court Masters events and Roland Garros right around the corner, this could well have been a vital week for the rest of her season.
Sherif's next tournament will be WTA Madrid, and her newest title in the same city should give her plenty of confidence for another good run this week.
