'Gender equality is not just a one-day conversation'
Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate the achievements of women in tennis while recognising that gender equality is not just a one-day conversation - it’s an ongoing commitment that requires action every single day.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2025 is ‘Accelerate Action.’ Now is the time to do exactly that. We must take meaningful steps toward ensuring that women and girls have equal opportunities in all areas of our sport.
Since the launch of the ITF’s Advantage All Gender Equality Strategy in 2018, we have made significant strides in increasing female participation in tennis, both on and off the court. Between 2018 and 2024, the percentage of women officials worldwide has risen from 21% to 31%, and female representation in coaching has increased from 20.6% in 2019 to 24.3% in 2024. The Global Tennis Report 2024 also highlighted an 8.3% growth in the total female playing population, bringing the gender balance to 40.3% female players.
Progress is evident, but there is still work to be done. A key goal remains achieving a minimum of 40% female representation on ITF and Regional Boards, Committees, and Commissions. To make this a reality, we, as male allies, must support and empower women leaders to stand for election.
Financial investment is another critical factor. The ITF invests millions of dollars into the women's World Tennis Tour each year to drive gender parity and narrow the gap with men's tennis. Our investment increases the number of tournaments, raises prize money, and provides hospitality to players to help raise incomes and cut costs.
In 2023, the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, supported by Gainbridge, offered record prize money, achieving parity with the Davis Cup. At the Paris Olympics and Paralympics, we also reached a 50/50 gender balance in officials' assignments.
As male allies, we have a crucial role to play. I call on all male leaders across tennis to pledge to become ‘Advantage All Male Allies.’ By making this commitment, we can create lasting change and drive gender equality in all aspects of our sport.
Together, let’s accelerate action and champion the change we want to see.
