Carreno Busta, Davidovich Fokina withdraw from singles at Paris 2024

08 Jul 2024

Pablo Carreno Busta and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina have each withdrawn from the singles event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games due to the right leg and back injuries, respectively, that forced them to skip Wimbledon.

Carreno Busta has been replaced in the singles draw by Pedro Martinez, who was unfortunate not to qualify for Spain in the first place having ranked inside the world’s top 50 at the ranking cut-off on 10 June (only for Spain to have already exceeded its quota of players in the singles draw).

World No. 63 Jaume Munar, meanwhile, takes Davidovich Fokina's spot.

Both Martinez and Munar are set to make their Olympic debuts for Spain alongside Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles event.

Carreno Busta who won the men’s singles bronze medal for Spain at Tokyo 2020 – had hoped for another memorable result at the upcoming Games on 27 July - 4 August, but has restricted his participation to the doubles event alongside Marcel Granollers.

The 32-year-old has picked up a muscle tear in the adductor of his right leg - his latest setback having spent the majority of the past 18 months on the sidelines following elbow surgery.

Carreno Busta dropped outside the world’s top 1000 as a result but used his protected ranking of No. 18 to enter the singles event at Paris 2024, hoping to emulate the highs he achieved at Tokyo 2020.

On his Olympic debut, he stunned Novak Djokovic to win the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020, a feeling he described as ‘even more incredible than winning a tournament’, but will still hope for another taste of silverware at Paris 2024 alongside Granollers in the doubles.

Eight tennis players will represent Spain in total at the upcoming Games – with Sara Sorribes and Cristina Bucsa also competing in the women’s event – although the headline draw is the enticing  doubles partnership between Nadal and Alcaraz.
